1.1 Description

Sodium persulfate is a white crystalline, odorless salt, with the density of 2.6. It is used as initiator for the polymerization of monomers and as a strong oxidizing agent in many applications. It has the particular advantage of being almost non-hygroscopic, of having a particularly good storage stability as a result of its extremely high purity and of being easy and safe to handle.

1.2  Application

1.2.1 Polymerization: initiator for the emulsion polymerization reactions in the preparation of acrylics, polyvinyl chlorides, polystyrenes, and neoprene etc., and for the emulsion copolymerization of styrene, acrylonitrile, butadiene. Moreover, as initiator in the manufacture of synthetic rubber (styrene butadiene and isoprene) and latex polymers.

1.2.2 Metal treatment: used in the treatment of metal surfaces (e.g. cleaning and etching of printed circuit boards, activation of copper and aluminum surfaces)

1.2.3 Cosmetics: essential component of bleaching formulations

1.2.4 Organic synthetisis: as an oxidizing agent in the preparation of aldehydes, ketones,, carboxylic acids, quinines, and a variety of other compounds. The pharmaceutical industry uses sodium persufate as a reagent in the preparation of antibiotics.

1.2.5 Paper: used in the sizing of paper and the repulping of wet-strength paper.

1.2.6 Textiles: used in the desizing and bleaching of textiles and the development of dyestuffs

1.2.7 Adhesive: used in the preparation of adhesive films and metal bonding adhesives

1.2.8 Environmental: suitable for a variety of environmental applications, such as soil remediation and wastewater/ground water cleanup

1.2.9 Swimming pools: used to purify water in swimming pools and other reclaimed water

1.2.10 Others:

1,4 Storage

NPS( SPS) is not combustible but assists combustion of combustible materials due to release of oxygen. It must be stored dry in closed containers and protected from direct sunlight, heat and humidity. Impurities such as dirt, rust or traces of metal and reductants may cause catalytic decomposition. The product as supplied or in solution needs to

be handled with proper care. The eye, skin and clothes must be protected when working with NPS( SPS). NPS SPS) as damp powder or aqueous solution has a bleaching and slightly corroding effect
